Charles began piano lessons at age 7 with Nancy Kruse, the music director of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at that time. She noted his talent for improvisation and playing by ear. When she moved away, he studied with Christopher Huntington, the church organist, who also played at the Cathedral of the Madeline, and is now the music director of The Good Shepherd. Charles now plays drums on the church's contemporary worship team under Christopher's direction. He started percussion lessons in 1999 at age 12 with Jay Lawrence, a renowned percussionist in the valley and still studies with Jay at today. He played in the band and in the jazz band at Wasatch Junior High and Skyline High School, both of which won several first-place awards in state-wide school competitions. The jazz band there was one of just 12 high school bands nationwide that was selected to perform at the annual Monterey Jazz Festival this past April. Charles joined Finally Friday in the spring of 2004 and is an integral part of the songwriting process. His house also serves as the bands “jam space”. Charles was awarded a marching band scholarship at the University of Utah where he currently studies mechanical engineering.
